On a strikingly clear wintry day I met with Andrea in Cheeseman Park. We shot photos for her various blog sites and profiles.
When planning for a portrait session most people want some advice about what to wear. There are many schools of thoughts and options, depending on the design of the final image. In this post I will discuss clothing ideas for a single person headshot.
The basic simple guidelines are as follows:
Keep it simple – solid color, long sleeves , classic neckline and proper fit.
Solid color: Patterns will be distracting and take the viewers eyes from your face. The best colors are from the cool palette which will contrast with the warmth of your skin tone. Best colors are blue, green, brown and grey. Please avoid bright eye catching colors like orange, yellow and red. There are some in between colors which may work depending on your complexion and the background chosen for the session. Black is OK and white can be used with a “high key” background.
Long sleeves are always a good choice. Your shoulder’s will often be pointed toward the camera, and for several reasons should remain covered. If you prefer, short sleeves are acceptable, but not as versatile.
Your neckline is the base for the headshot. A classic v-neck can provide a nice angular lead in for the viewer. If you are self conscious about the appearance of your neck, then a turtle neck, buttoned color, scarf or a necktie, are all good alternatives.
Of course all clothes should be clean, pressed, and well fitting for a polished look.
That being said, please bring an outfit that you just love to wear. Even if it breaks all the rules above, you should wear something that just makes you feel good.
Of course the intention going into the portrait is a key factor. If you want a professional image and normally wear a suit to work , please show up dressed for work. If you want to use some of the images for a personal profile like Facebook or on a dating site, then bring along some casual clothes as well. If you are involved in an artistic field, feel free get creative.
